Today sees the launch of the most unusual Swatch collection in a long, long time with the new-for-2019 Swatch Flymagic, an arguably cool-looking, albeit genuinely expensive collection of three steel-cased watches, featuring a reversed and revised Sistem51 automatic, fully mechanical caliber and a new magnetism-resistant - but contrary to common belief, not paramagnetic - Nivachron hairspring.While the Nivachron hairspring is interesting, even more compelling is the styling and pricing of the Swatch Flymagic - so that’s where we begin. At 45mm-wide and 14.8 mm-thick, the Flymagic is a beastly watch that pairs un-Swatch-like proportions with a measly 30 meters of water resistance. And you’ll probably need more than that for it to stand the test of your waterfall of tears, given the $1,500 price tag. Wow.

It is no secret that in its heyday, the American watch industry was the best in the world. Brands like Hamilton, Bulova, Elgin, Waltham, and others were known for producing the best industrialized timepieces and today that legacy is kept alive in scant few places. Perhaps the only true watch manufacture left in the United States is RGM. Started by watchmaker Roland G. Murphy, RGM is located near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a historic hub of American timepiece production.For the 2013 best watches holiday giveaway, the lucky winner will accompany me (Ariel Adams) on a several day trip to RGM for a unique experience at how watches are made in America. We will spend two days at the RGM manufacture learning about how they make American watches the original way. We will also get a personal, and probably, a behind-the-scenes tour of the nearby National Watch & Clock Museum conducted by Roland Murphy himself (who by the way isn’t a regular tour guide at the museum).
