Today's Traditional Watch Industry Can't Exist Without What Rolex Is Selling
As I continue to look at the biggest challenges facing the wristwatch industry today, I often come to the topic of marketing and consumer demand. In this article, I turn my attention to an analysis of the emotions involved when a consumer purchases a timepiece. Why does someone want a timepiece in the first place, and what needs to happen for a consumer to justify spending money on a non-utilitarian (these days) object? My discussion revolves around the fact that Rolex is probably responsible for more than its fair share of traditional-watch-demand creation. Perhaps so much so that, without Rolex creating demand for, and awareness about, luxury watches, most other watch companies would never be able to find enough interested customers - despite the inherent value or originality of their products. Rolex may very well be the engine that creates global demand for luxury watches, and that larger demand naturally creates niches for non-Rolex makers of luxury watch products.
Breitling Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown Watch Hands-On
For perfectly good reasons, an ambassador announcement rarely elicits more than an eye roll in the watch world, but when a brand partnership is done right, and for the right reasons, everyone stands to get something out of it-including watch fans. Thankfully, Breitling's recently assembled "Surfer Squad"is surprisingly shaping up to fall in the latter camp, at least in my book, with the debut of the new Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown edition watch. Now, bear in mind this isn't an entirely new watch-it just adds a new dial and a sustainable twist to the existing in-house Superocean II we covered during Baselworld this year, in the form of a recycled nylon ‘Econyl’ NATO strap thanks to a neat tie-in with the ocean preservation initiative of Breitling Squad member Kelly Slater.Hands-on images by David BredanGranted, it's not the first time we've seen a strap built with recycled materials in the watch space. Oris released a Diver Sixty Five earlier this year (
