Aged Automata & Other Clockwork Creations In Swiss Watch Museums
Mechanical magic is a thing of wonder and myth. For centuries, artisans skilled with tools and gears have been engineering the impossible. Today, the hidden underbellies of machinery both large and small are mostly kept from plain sight in a society where mechanical things are no longer as interesting to most people. Today’s most advanced machines operate on levels we cannot even view with our own eyes. Our phones and computers operate with almost no moving parts. The movement is based on microscopic energy moving around in cheaply made circuit boards. The modern era has removed the child-like enjoyment many of us receive from viewing how things work.In Switzerland things are a bit different. At least in the watchmaking regions of the country. There, an adherence to traditional mechanical watchmaking is both tradition and business. Keeping alive the savoir of machines helps the locals remember the history behind today’s modern mechanical creations, and inspires those of us
Parmigiani Ovale Tourbillon Watch Hands-On
The aptly named Parmigiani Ovale Tourbillon is named as such because of the interesting oval-shaped case of the Ovale timepiece family. This style came out for Parmigiani about 1-2 years ago and looks remarkably better on the wrist than one might expect, given the unorthodox shape of the case. In addition to being a pretty decent tourbillon-based timepiece, I think something like the Parmigiani Ovale Tourbillon is good foundation on which to talk about the pros and cons of non-round case shapes. The safest shape to use when producing a wrist watch is a simple round case. In the emerging smartwatch world, it has been interesting to see how well received smartwatches with round cases have been. Products like the Moto 360 have a round-shaped case which actually offers diminished screen functionality despite being more physically attractive than square or rectangular-shaped cases. So I think it is safe to say that the watch world experiences a distinct pro round case bias.
