Rado Ceramica Automatic Watch
Last year, in 2016, Rado updated their minimalistic rectangular Ceramica watch with a totally redesigned collection by industrial designer Konstantin Grcic. A number of versions were included in the release, all very stylish-looking and powered by quartz movements-which perhaps left mechanical watch snobs who otherwise liked the design feeling as though they were strangely attracted to a “fashion watch.” For 2017, the newly designed Rado Ceramica, as all versions are apparently named, got some mechanical models. It is actually the first time for watches in the Ceramica family, which has been around for a while, to be powered by an automatic movement.This is going to be a polarizing watch as it relies heavily on aesthetics, which will always be subjective, but I think Rado got a lot of things right and is offering something pretty unique. The first new Zenith watch of 2010 that I saw bored me to sleep at night. It wasn’t a bad watch, but it just didn’t do anything for me except remind of all the other watches that look like it. Now I learn about another new for 2010 timepiece that I actually do like (though it is not very practical). It isn’t the neatest watch in the world, but it does take a very uncommon complication and places it into 1970s retro sport watch (why? Don’t ask why… What? You know better than the Swiss?). Jaeger-LeCoultre released a watch with the same complication this year, but in a more classy traditional style watch. The complication is a foudroyante, and Zenith is specially equipped to make one. A foudroyante (also known as a “jumping seconds” watch) is a watch with a chronograph that is able to measure fractions of a second, done via a dedicated dial.
